In 1913, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Peace of Hamina, an Orthodox chapel was built on the site of the Uspenski Cathedral in Katajanokka . However, this Peace Chapel was considered a symbol of Russian repressive policies, so after Finland gained independence, fanatical nationalist students tarred it with tar. The tar could not be cleaned from the soapstone walls of the chapel, so the building was demolished in 1920.
The Katajanokka tote bag is part of Kuviokioski’s Helsinki series. The bag is hand-printed in Vallila, Helsinki. You can choose either a black or green print for the bag. Please note that each bag is unique, and slight variations in color tones may occur between different production batches.
