A harbour area was planned for the sandbank in the late 1910s. The plan was never implemented, however, when representatives of the Chamber of Commerce visited the site and were impressed by the sandbank that was there. The beach had previously been used for sand storage, and over time, huge piles of sand had collapsed and spread out into the surrounding area, forming a solid sandy beach. Hietaniemi Beach, or Hietsu, was established in 1929.
